RULES OF THE EUROPEAN TENOR CONTEST named after Jan Kiepura
IN SOSNOWIEC (May 13th to 15th of 2009)

Management of the European Tenor Contest named after Jan Kiepura:

1. The European Tenor Contest named after Jan Kiepura is organized by the City Hall of Sosnowiec and the Mazovia Musical Theatre named after Jan Kiepura in Warsaw shall be held in the city of Sosnowiec from May 13th to May 15th of 2009.

2. The European Tenor Contest named after Jan Kiepura is managed by the members of the Management of the European Tenor Contest named after Jan Kiepura.

3. The Contest is open to singers-tenors from around the globe who are graduates or students of music academies, music universities, music high schools, music conservatories and who are soloists of opera houses, operettas, music theaters and professional choirs.

4. Candidates who intend to take part in the European Tenor Contest named after Jan Kiepura cannot be older than 30 years of age by the date of May 12th of 2009.

5. Candidates who intend to take part in the European Tenor Contest named after Jan Kiepura should deliver the following documents by March 31st of 2009:

- application form for participation in the European Tenor Contest named after Jan Kiepura, which should be sent by e-mail to the address tenor.kiepura@mtmoperetka.pl and by regular mail to the address: MTM OPERETKA im. Jana Kiepury, ul. Kolumbijska 3, 01-991 Warszawa with an annotation TENOR solely on the dedicated form posted on the website www.tenor.kiepura.pl (the postage stamp date shall be taken into account for mail delivered by post and the date of forwarding in the case of e-mail);
- a CD or DVD with a recording made by the Candidate of the chosen pieces of music from the obligatory program (enclose the notes, please)
- bank transfer confirmation slip the amount of 50 € sent to the address MTM OPERETKA im. Jana Kiepury, ul. Kolumbijska 3, 01-991 Warszawa, with a memo on the transfer: WPISOWE NA KONKURS (entry fee). Transfers should be made to the following bank account: 82 1160 2202 0000 0001 2548 0177

6. Candidates will be notified by post and by e-mail of their acceptance in the contest by April 20th of 2009 . The list of Contest participants will also be posted on the website www.tenor.kiepura.pl

7. Travel costs both ways and accommodation costs to the end of the 1st stage of the European Tenor Contest named after Jan Kiepura shall be borne by the participants. Furthermore, the Contest Office shall grant the Candidates help in finding accommodation in Sosnowiec. The accommodation costs of participants who qualify for the 2nd and 3rd stage shall be covered by the organizers of European Tenor Contest named after Jan Kiepura.

8. The Organizers ensure the participants of the European Tenor Contest named after Jan Kiepura a free of charge rehearsal room, accompanists and transport between the hotel and the contest audition hall. Rehearsals and auditions shall be held according to the schedule set by the Organizers. Participants who intend to use their own accompanist shall bear all the costs related to that accompanist’s stay at the contest.

9. During May 12th of 2009 (between 3PM-7PM) or May 13th of 2009 (between 9AM-11AM), the Candidates are obliged to present at the Contest Office the relevant documents confirming their age, education and current artistic activity. Furthermore, the participants shall be handed a precise schedule of rehearsals and auditions of the 1st stage of the contest. e-mail: tenor.kiepura@mtmoperetka.pl

10. Auditions for the contest shall be open to the public and shall be conducted in three stages:
1st stage: May 13th of 2009; 11:30AM-2:30PM and 4PM-8PM
2nd stage: May 14th of 2009; 11AM-2PM and 4PM-8PM
3rd stage: May 15th of 2009; 11AM-2PM and 4PM-8PM

11. Program presentations in the 1st and 2nd stage shall be accompanied by a piano. The participants are obliged to have their own note records. Presentations in the 3rd stage shall be performed with the orchestra of the Mazovia Music Theatre named after Jan Kiepura. Participants qualified to the 3rd stage shall hold rehearsals with the orchestra on May 14th of 2009 according to the agreed schedule.

12. The Jury of the European Tenor Contest named after Jan Kiepura shall be announced ten days prior to the beginning of the 1st stage i.e. on May 2nd of 2009. The first session of the Jury shall take place on May 11th of 2009 during which the schedule and the rules shall be agreed.

13. Members of the Jury shall not evaluate their pupils participating in the Contest. A pupil shall be understood as a participant who took singing lessons from any Jury member for a period of at least three months.

14. A Participant shall be evaluated by the Jury directly after his performance according to a scale of 1 to 20 points.

15. A maximum of 15 persons shall be qualified to the 2nd stage of the contest according to an order of the highest arithmetic average achieved by the individual participants. In extraordinary cases related to the level of the Contest, the Jury may change the number of participants in the 2nd and 3rd stage of the Contest.

16. A maximum of 6 persons will qualify to the 3rd stage according to the order of the highest arithmetic average.

17. All documents and evaluations of the Jury during the auditions are confidential and may only be disclosed after the conclusion of the European Tenor Contest named after Jan Kiepura. Furthermore, all the evaluations and decisions of the Jury are final and irrefutable.

18. The prize pool has been determined as follows:
1st place 10 000 €
2nd place 5.000 €
3rd place 2.500 €
Furthermore, Laureates shall participate in the gala concert closing the European Tenor Contest named after Jan Kiepura in Sosnowiec.

19. Besides the regulatory prizes, there shall also be special prizes funded by institutions, companies and private persons.

20. The regulatory prizes and special prizes shall be presented during the gala concert which shall take place on May 16th of 2009 in Sosnowiec.

21. The program of the concert shall be agreed by the organizers of the European Tenor Contest named after Jan Kiepura.

22. The organizers shall cover the accommodation costs of the laureates in Sosnowiec on May 17th of 2009.

23. The organizers reserve the right to film, record and repeatedly replay in full or in part, transmit or retransmit the material from the European Tenor Contest named after Jan Kiepura via radio or television stations. The organizers also reserve the right record a CD or DVD from the auditions and gala concert performances of the laureates without being financially liable to the participants.

24. Any doubts arising in relation to the provisions hereof shall be settled according to the original version of these rules in the Polish language.

During each stage, the participants are obliged to perform a different opera or operetta aria than the one performed in the preceding stage.

1st stage:

1. Songs by Polish composers from the following selection:
• Frederic Chopin,
• Stanisław Moniuszko,
• Ignacy Jan Paderewski,
• Mieczysław Karłowicz,
• Władysław Żeleński,
• Jan Karol Gall
• Lucjan Marczewski

2. Opera arias from a composer of the 19th/20th century.

2nd stage:

1. Italian song of a Naples character from the selection of the following composers:
